Purpose To probe into the changes of causes and residual vision between eleven years in Beijing School for the Blind. In order to raise some suggestions for the prevention of childhood blindness and to evaluate the feasible of teaching the separating of blind and low vision in Chinese Schools for the Blind. Methods We had use of routine examination methods of ophthalmology to check the 129 and 115 students in details at Beijing School For The Blind in1989 and 2000 respectively. Results Congenital cataract /aphakia led in the causes of blindness in 1989,and congenital microcornea/microphthalmia in 2000, microcornea/microphthalmia(1989) and congenital glaucoma(2000) came second, and congenital glaucoma (1989) and congenital cataract /aphakia (2000) were the third. The first cause of blindness was congenital cataract in 1989, and it became the third in 2000.The curable blindness was 27.90% in 1989 which reduced to 0.87% in 2000, This indicated that eye care services are a change for the better than before in China. More than 50%(61.24% in 1989, 53.91% in 2000) students who had usable vision in Beijing School For The Blind, It is quite evident that low vision education is still great importance to the Schools for the Blind in China.
