RISK FACTORS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MACULAR DEGENERATION

It is becoming more and more evident that there are many risk factors that exist in the development of macular degeneration. They include age, gender, race, genetics, iris color, refraction, monocular AMD, being a twin, post-menopausal women, drusen, smoking, exposure to light, nutritional factors, and systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and hypertension. This paper will cover the latest studies on the various risk factors in the development of age-related macular degeneration as well the risk factors that have the potential to be modified. The AREDS (age-related eye disease study) study of over 4700 patients, conducted by the National Eye Institute which was completed in late 2001 will be covered and well as the general concept of the efficacy of anti-oxidants in the treatment of macular degeneration.
