The background of the study
The author was carried out a summary of demographic data (age, sex and origin), of the diagnoses carried out in the consultation of Low vision, of the initial visual acuity and the final visual acuity with the definitive optic aid. Although each patient could have more than a diagnosis, the author took the main diagnosis that could explain the visual impairment in each patient and it was related with the patient's age, type of defect of the visual field, type of optic aids formulated and the complementary non optic aids and the total time of training used in each patient.
The method used
This paper presents the preliminary results of the review of clinical histories from all the patients attended in the Low Vision Unit between September 1°/1.994 and July 30/2.001.
The results obtained
The results of the study it was obtained that 57% was men and the remaining percentage was women, 75% of the patient came from Bucaramanga and its metropolitan area, the age group that had bigger number of patients was that of 15 - 44 years and older than sixty years. The most frequent diagnoses were Age-related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, macular dystrophies and macular corioretinitis. The optic aids formulated with more frequency were the microscopes, telescopes and magnifiers. The non optics aids recommended mainly are the lectern and the fluorescent lamps with a flexible spring arm. The time average of training was of 12 hours.
The conclusion reached
In general, the results of the revision show the statistical data corresponding to the frequency and incidence of the pathologies found in our influence area and their relationship with the different variables outlined previously. It is important to clarify that these results are preliminary and the data could vary in the definitive presentation of the work.
