IMPORTANCE OF VISUAL REHABILITATION INCLUSION WITHIN PHOTODINAMIC THERAPY PLAN OF TREATMENT

Background: Comparative study between two patients groups with ARMD(age related macular degeneration), age between 62 and 85,treated with PT (photodinamic therapy). Methods: Eighteen patients were divided in two equals groups.In the first group were introduced a near visual rehabilitation programme next to first PT application.In the second group did not propose rehabilitation,just follow the cases.
Results: Over the first nine patients everyone through rehabilitation and optical devices achieved to read newspaper letters. After second application,two of them improved the VA (visual acuity) in one line and had to change to less magnification.One patient change the PRL (preferred retinal locus) after second PT application. Within the nine second group patients, three of them started using a hand magnifier for themselves, one can read with conventional glasses(VA 20/60) and the last five manifested did not achieve near activities.
Conclusion: The patiens included in a visual rehabilitation programme , showed satisfied with the PT results and some of them attributed to PT to recover the near tasks. The patients remaining were not completely satisfied because they cannot performance near activities.
